Zero Waste Tea

I’ve been a tea drinker for as long as I can remember.  Recently, I learned that there are traces of plastic in teabags, and ever since, I’ve stayed away like the plague. I have started using loose tea and actually prefer it. The tea has a much stronger taste than bagged and if using a flavored tea, the taste is more prominent. I had a loose-leaf tea kettle sitting forlornly in my cabinet. I dusted it off and it is now in regular rotation. In the summer, I’m obviously not making hot tea, but have been actively using the kettle to make iced tea. Currently, I’m using Private Selection’s Cranberry Blood Orange Loose Leaf which has a great fruity taste.  I have also used numerous teas from Rishi Tea which is wonderful too.

Cranberry Blood Orange Iced Tea

a fruity iced tea that is great for a hot summer day

  • 6-8 tsp cranberry blood orange loose leaf tea ((depends how strong you like your tea))
  • enough water to fill your tea kettle
  1. put six to eight scoops of loose leaf tea into your tea strainer and place in matching kettle

  2. boil water and fill teapot (I usually pour over the leaves).

  3. let steap for 5 minutes

  4. if you are using a plastic pitcher put in a stove pot to cool otherwise, all that nasty BPA could leech into the tea.  If your pitcher is of any other material you may skip this step.

  5. Repeat until your tea pitcher is full.  I can usually use the same tea leaves up to three times before they start to loss their strength and/or flavor.

  1. Thank you for this post. I’m currently researching the differences between a tea pot and a tea kettle and would like to get the insights of experts. Between a tea pot and kettle, which one would you choose? Why do you choose one above the other? Thanks so much.
