Top Six Contemporary Books That Should Be Taught in High School

Before I state my top ten I’d like to note that I haven’t been in school for quite some time so some of these could be taught in school without my realization.
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak– an emotional (fictional) novel on the Holocaust.  Unlike Anne Frank’s Diary which I’ve always thought was gender specific The Book Thief could cross both sexes and all age groups
The Hunger by Games Suzanne Collins– It has a similar idea to that of Lord of the Flies and is a story of resilience
The Giver by Lois Lowry — is a futuristic novel that shows the consequences of one’s actions and what life could be if your future was chosen for you
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green — a novel of cancer exhibiting the power to go on.
Columbine by David Cullen — This might end up on the “banned book list but I do think the subject of school shoots which has unfortunately become more prevalent is something that needs to be addressed and Dave Cullen’s book is so factual that I thinking it would be an excellent, yet tragic example of cause and effect.
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher — Bullying, and suicide due to bullying has become as epidemic as obesity and a topic that others should be educated on.

  1. I'm with you, too! It's been ages since I was in school – though I do have younger sisters who are closer to those school days. I think they did have to read THE GIVER. I thought of including THE BOOK THIEF but I only just got my copy (and haven't read it yet). From what I've heard it's a definite should be required read!
