Summer Mini-Readathon Starting Post & Updates

Posted July 10, 2011 by Whitney in read-a-thon / 7 Comments

Here is my start up post for the Summer Mini-Readathon  hosted by Sarah Says and because I’m an organizational freak I’ve Bullet List my game plan/book listed below.

Game Plan

  • 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM (early to bed early to rise)
  • Use caffeine sparingly, otherwise I’ll crash and burn
  • Find healthy snacks I usually graze for those
  • Don’t push self to read nonstop and take a break when my eyes start to burn
  • Update and participate in mini challenges when I feel the need
  • Have fun

Books

  • Splender by Anna Godbersen (currently reading)
  • Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen
  • Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
  • The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai
  • Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

First Mini-Challenge

1. Tell everyone three random things about yourself:
– My house has been hit by lightening
– Horses freak me out
– Snow White is my favorite Disney Princess

2. Is this your first readathon?
No, I participated in Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon last year and I’m now totally hooked

3. Do you have any specific goals for today? (# of books or pages to read?)
I’m a slow reader so would love to read two books

4. Do you have any specific snacks, drinks, or books planned?
No specific snacks planned.  Look above for my reading list.

5. What hours do you plan on reading during? (For example, I’m aiming for 10 AM to 10 PM Eastern time).
See Above

First Update: 10:30 AM
Currently Reading: Splendor by Anna Godbersen
Pages Read:100
Time Reading: 2 Hours 30 Minutes
Time Blogging: 30 Minutes
Caffeine Intake: 1

Second Update: 2:29PM
Currently Reading: Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen
Books Finished: Splendor by Anna Godbersen
Pages Read: 100
Time Read: 2 Hours 30 Minutes
Time Blogging: 20 Minutes

Third Update: 5:45 PM
Currently Reading: Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen
Pages Read: 50
Time Read: 1 Hour
Caffeine Intake: 1

Fourth Update:
Currently Reading: Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen
Pages Read: 20
Time Read: 30 Minutes

Concluding Mini-Challenge:
1. How many books and/or pages were you able to read?
I read one book, Splendor by Anna Godbersen and started Bright Young Things by the same author.  I read 270 pages.

2. About how many hours were you able to read for? (Were there many distractions, breaks, etc?)
I read for 7 1/2 hours  (slow reader) with several breaks in between.  Towards the end my reading time grew shorter as it was starting to make me sleepy, its just a little too relaxing.

3. Do you have any likes/dislikes about the 12-hour readathon, compared to a 24-hour readathon?
I could never read for 24 hours 2 in the morning reading would be a killer.  There’s less of a commitment with 12 hours and feels more manageable.

4. Favorite and least favorite books that you read today?
I really enjoyed Splendor but am bummed that The Luxe series is over.  As for Bright Young Things, its too soon to tell.

5. Do you have any suggestions for things you’d like me to do differently if I host another mini-readathon?
I wouldn’t change a thing!  I’d definitely do it again.

    1. I'm so excited it's today! I just posted the first mini-challenge if you want to come by and take a look. Feel free to complete it even if you've already started 🙂

    2. Your house was hit by lightning? OH, that's freaky and kind of scary … was everything OK?

I'll be lucky to get to two books, since I'm spending so much time visiting everyone else LOL!

OK .. I'm REALLY finally off to start reading! 🙂 Have fun and good luck!

    3. Sarah– Me too, I'm always the most productive in the morning.

Julie– Honestly I wouldn't know, I slept through the whole thing.

BookBelle– Definitely the eyes, and for some reason I think they're going to step on me. I can see the headline now "Death by horse".

    4. Snow White? Really? Even with her little warbly voice? It's kiiiind of all about Princess Aurora.

PLANNING. I approve of your schedule.

    5. The house we used to live up until last year had a most unfortunate doorbell. It kept being struck by lightning until we got tired of fixing it and just let people knock on the door instead.
