In America, demons wear white hoods.
In 1915, The Birth of a Nation casts a spell across America, swelling the Klans ranks and drinking deep from the darkest thoughts of white folk. All across the nation they ride, spreading fear and violence among the vulnerable. They plan to bring hell to Earth. But even Ku Kluxes can die. Standing in their way are Maryse Boudreaux and her fellow resistance fighters, a foulmouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter. Armed with blade, bullet, and bomb, they hunt their hunters and send the Klans demons straight to hell. But something awfuls brewing in Macon, and the war on hell is about to heat up. Can Maryse stop the Klan before it ends the world?
Mini-Review
s was different from what I was expecting, although, I can’t quite put my finger on what I was expecting in the first place. P. Djèlí Clark’s short book was unique with characters that had strong independent voices. I think what caught me off, guard was the genre. I went into Ring Shout thinking it would be a historical horror novel and while that was mostly true it felt more like a fantasy or Science fiction book; which while unique threw me off at first.
However, P. Djèlí Clark’s writing draws you in from the first page with the reader only drawing breath after reaching the conclusion.
