This vs This
One of my first purchases when starting zero waste was a Klean Kanteen. In the zero waste movement, a reusable water bottle is consistently listed as “One of the Big Four”. There is a bottle of water on my bedside table — it’s convenient and I’ve always done it. Upon starting my cleaner living path, I quickly realized how unhealthy this habit was, not only for the environment, but for myself as well. I can only imagine the BPA leaching from it like Flubber from Robin Williams’ beaker. Anyway, even though I had thought about getting one for a while, my Klean Kanteen was an impulse buy. It was shiny and purple (my favorite color), and before I knew it, had made its way to the checkout.
Sixty million bottles of water end up in landfills every day. The idea of not adding to that number is splendid. Over the Fourth of July weekend, my boyfriend and I filled our Klean Kanteens with iced tea, fit them into my oversized purse, and made our way to Northern Wisconsin. Not only did I have a cold drink for the next three hours, but I didn’t have to think about getting a refreshment on the road. It is our small part for the environment.
