After missing February’s monthly review I began to question, are posts on what I accomplished in said month really necessary? It is time intensive linking to all reviews and bookish happenings during the month. It may be just me but these posts can be an emotional roller coaster (of which I hate) if I read a plethora of novels in that time period I feel a sense of pride but if not enough I feel it is a whole 30 days wasted.
I have been debating as to whether I should just drop the posts all together, they can be a bother and occasionally feel like they are something I have to do, becoming a chore. I have a page for all my reviews anyway, which is much easier to keep track of and probably the most important, seeing as how this is a book blog. I have actually been considering doing mid-year updates, while the linkage may be the same I believe I could do a better overview of any accomplishments made and probably more detailed instead of just throwing a couple links on the post.
So what are your thoughts do? Do you indulge in some sort of progress report? (weekly, monthly etc) Is it truly a necessary to a book blog or does it just clog your Google Reader?
On a side note, this was not a post to judge those who do partake in this exercise, as I really do enjoy seeing other’s monthly progress; I am merely curious as to whether it adds or takes away from the blogging experience.
I don't usually do any sort of progress report. I'm more interested in the quality of what I've read and not necessarily the quantity. I feel like if I started doing progress reports that I would get really tied up with how many books I read each month!
I do a monthly recap, but I just started it this year. It does seem to keep me on my toes, but I wouldn't say it's at all necessary. I also recap every twenty books — that might be something better for you? Then the focus isn't on what you didn't accomplish, but on the books themselves…
I do a monthly wrap-up, and I don't actually know if anyone enjoys reading it, but I enjoy doing it. As much as I want people to like my posts, I also like to have fun with it myself. So if you don't like doing the posts, then don't! I'm just kind of obsessed with lists and progress reports and stuff like that. 😛 Occasionally I see very little progress, but it doesn't really bother me. I've always read something!
I do a monthly progress report when I feel like it. This year, I haven't done one at all but maybe I'll start it up again.
Funnily enough, I've actually considered starting a monthly report on my blog, but like you, I worry that it will just be full of reiterations. I've even tossed around the idea of a quarterly progress report, perhaps divided by seasons.
I do, however, always enjoy reading a blogger's thoughts on their own progress reports. 🙂
I do a weekly update, and lately I've been linking it with Book Journey's round-up "It's Monday — What Are You Reading?" I do it so I can take a step back to see if I'm enjoying what I'm reading or falling into a rut, and so that later I can look back and see what I was reading, what I dragged around for months without making progress on, and so forth.
I don't like doing monthly reports because it's too much work to dig up all that info, and like you I get tied up with whether I'm wasting my time or doing well. But at the weekly level, it's a fast post but I don't have as much invested.
I'm tempted to drop my monthly wrap-up posts, too, especially since I do weekly wrap-ups as well. I think I'll just incorporate some of what I do in my monthly reviews into my weekly ones, and that way I'll have everything covered.
I usually like reading other people's monthly review posts, though! It's handy because it lets me catch up if I missed a few of their posts, for instance.
