March Classics Club Meme

The Classics Club monthly meme is another way to bring members of The Classics Club together. The post for the month will go up on the main page of this blog on the 2nd of the month, and you’ll have all month to respond over at your blog.

Q: Do you love Jane Austen or want to “dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone”? (Phrase borrowed from Mark Twain).

  1. Why? (for either answer)?
  2. Favorite and/or least favorite Austen novel?
A: I LOVE Jane Austen, she is my favorite author, her stories come alive for me and are completely ingrossing.  Her leading men don’t hurt either (couagh Mr. Darcy).  I know there are others out there who would love to act on Marky Mark’s quote, her books are old, her character’s names are all too similar and confusing or its chick lit disguised as a classic.  I love that her novels are old and yet have translated 100 years later, her character’s names may run in rotation but they are all so diverse and original that I don’t find it difficult, for the last, yes her novels are romances but hold more depth than a Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan chick flick.
As for my favorite Austen novel, that is a no-brainer — Pride and Prejudice.  It is smart and witty, Elizabeth Bennet is someone I’d love to be best friends with — and Mr. Darcy!

  1. I love Austen 🙂 I DO agree about the names – not that they're the same book to book, but that within that book there can be three different people all being referred to just by the same last name and that crap can be confusing! I've gotten used to it over the years, but when I first read Austen I definitely had to go back and re-read stuff to figure out who was who.
