I’m a big fan of watching movies that have been adapted from books, and occasionally the movie is actually better. To embrase this interest of mine I’ve started a weekly post to feature books that are hitting the big screen.
Release Date: May 13
Set in the 1790s, Love and Friendship centers on beautiful widow Lady Susan Vernon, who has come to the estate of her in-laws to wait out colorful rumors about her dalliances circulating through polite society. Whilst there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica.
With the exception of a short, this will be the first feature-length film of Lady Susan (why it is called Love & Friendship don’t ask me) . It is adapted to the big screen by Whit Stillman and is scheduled to hit the big screens on May 13 with Kate Beckinsale slated to be Lady Susan Vernon.
This film is actually an adaptation of Austen’s Lady Susan, a completed novella. I’ve read the novella: it’s epistolary & quite brilliant. 🙂 Love & Friendship is a brief story (also completed). I think she wrote it when she was about sixteen. Love & Friendship is hilarious but has no relation to this film. For some reason they used the wrong title.
It sounded a lot like Lady Susan to me as well. Although, articles I read didn’t have any mention of it so assumed I was mistaken. Because of that, I went against my better judgement but will correct it in this post.
