One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.
New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian DIVERGENT series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.
I’m not sure how I feel about Insurgent. The reader does get a deeper look at the different factions and Dauntless training, but it got repetitive. Tris goes through a simulation and someone tells her she’s Divergent, she goes through another simulation and someone else figures out she’s Divergent, and round and round we go. In Insurgent we learn more about Four but I wasn’t completely surprised by what was unearthed. It wasn’t necessarily predictable but the mysteries behind him didn’t wow me.
On another note, for whatever reason it seems a young adult novel cannot be written without a make out scene. While there was more than one make out scene and several I can’t get my hands off you, it was restrained enough that it wasn’t overpowering and fixation of the plot.
In my review for Divergent I discussed my concern for gun control in the novel. The impact here, while still in use is lessened which I was thankful for as usage of the weapon irks me.
Overall, Insurgent was an upstanding sequel to Divergent and will probably read Allegiant. Although unlike my thoughts upon reading Divergent, I don’t think I’ll be racing to open the last installment of the trilogy as readily.
Although I haven't read Allegiant yet, I think that Roth's writing quality seems to decrease with each of her books (based on the reviews I've read on Allegiant). I agree with you that while I enjoyed Divergent, Insurgent was not quite as good.
Christie @ Read by the Undead
I agree, Roth's writing takes a slump the futher I read which is unfortunate as the idea is interesting.
