I Was Hit On In The Bookstore

I was frequenting my local Barnes and Noble, browsing through the bookshelves.  This guy comes up to me and starts conversing, what do you do?  What kind of books do you like etc.  He told me his name (which I promptly forgot) and after a few minutes he says he has to go meet his brother.  Fine with me, unless your name is Fitzwilliam Darcy do not bother me in the bookstore.  I am busy looking at books about Mr. Darcy.

So anyway, time passes and I’ve moved down the aisle when he comes back again,  saying, and I quote “Whitney, I think you’re cute and I’d ask you out…if I wasn’t already married.”  Queue uncomfortable laughter.  A woman a few shelves away, gives a surreptitious glance and the man whose name I couldn’t remember moves on.  Not only did I not realize he was putting the moves on me, but he is also a pig!  Plus, at the time I was 25 and look like I’m 15 so not only was he a pig he may have been a pervert too.  It would have been ironic if we were standing next to Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita.
So I ask, are bookstore the literary bar?  What the hell was that!

  1. Well, that was no Dash and Lily, was it? I'd be thrilled to be hit on in a bookshop – but by someone cute, not married, preferably slightly geeky and willing to talk books with me on the spot rather than just being predatory. Your encounter would be have been more 'back away slowly and seek the company of another person until he's gone', I think… 🙁

    • No Dash and Lily. Bit of a disappointment. Once I saw the guy head for the door I breathed a sigh of relieve; and it was a funny story later.

  2. Hahahahaha It is a funny story, and I wouldn't mind being hit on in a bookstore… as long as the guy isn't a pig nor a pervert (I look pretty young too and I'm 22!)!

  3. Oh, dear. That is so hilarious and so sad at the same time. I used to work at my local Barnes and Noble, and the employees were hit on all the time. My coworkers often had cute readers request a phone number after chatting about books, but me…I was only ever hit on by creepy old men. Joy.

Hypothetically, bookstores should be a great place to meet somebody. It's on the of few places one can be sure to interact with other (hopefully, intelligent!) readers. Unfortunately, it rarely works out that way. At least for me.

Ah, well. He can go back to his wife, and you can go back to Mr Darcy. 🙂

  4. You get hit on if you are in a library too! It never fails that at least once a week, one of us will be hit on in my library. This is not limited to the female librarians either, but our one male librarian has had many offers! I don't know what it is about books. At least there is always Mr. Darcy. 🙂
