The Gone with the Wind Read-a-long is host by My Friend Amy
Proposed Chapters for March 21:
Chapters 19-27
Where am I?
Chapter 23, Scarlett has just sent Prissy to fetch Rhett Butler after Melanie has given birth.
How are you enjoying the story so far?
Much too easy a question, of course I’m loving it and I really start to get carried away with Gone with the Wind while the Yankees are in Atlanta.
Do you like Scarlett and admire her strength and conviction to survive or does she bother you?
I think Ashley Wilkes says it best “How could I help loving you — you who have all the passion for life that I lack? But that kind of love isn’t enough to make a successful marriage for two people who are as different as we are.”
In other words I have a love/hate relationship with Scarlett I admire her “passion for living” but at the same time am vexed by her obsession with Ashley when Rhett Butler and she are so alike and meant to be if it weren’t for her/their stubbornness.
Melanie? Do we like her?
Um despite my better judgment I do, and is the only truly kind character in the novel. While Melly does have a naive persona to her I think she knows more than she lets on and is like peeling an onion.
Has reading this book changed your thoughts or given you any additional insight into this period of history?
I don’t think this book has changed my thoughts on this period of history, but is still very thought provoking. Also, while Gone with the Wind is a little melodramatic is based on tales Mitchell heard from her ancestors on the subject while growing up, which I find very interesting adding more believability to the classic.
I am loving everything you have to say about this book 🙂 Scarlett wins your admiration even while you hate to give it to her 🙂 Been away from the blogging world for a week, been busy to hell and back but it is nice to be here again! 🙂
Come to think of it, I have a love/hate relationship with all the major characters, but still love the book. Glad to have you back in the blogging world, off to check your blog now…
Yes, I love that quote. Sets up the whole do I or don't I love Scarlett? Confusing Ashley's delicate mind.
