She threw her arms around Pearl. Across the table, Moody gave up on his homework and slammed his math book shut, and in the living room, Mia jammed her paintbrush into a jar of water, lips pursed, paint scrubbing from the bristles in a dirt-colored swirl.

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned -- from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.
Enter Mia Warren -- an enigmatic artist and single mother -- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.
When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town--and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.
This sounds good. I’ve seen this book around a lot. This week I’m reading The English Wife by Lauren Willig. Happy reading!
I had seen it floating around too and decided to see what all the fuss is about. I’m only 30 pages in but so far so good.
I loved this book, and that is a great opening. It piqued my curiosity immediately.
Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT”
The beginning of Little Fires Everywhere piqued my curiosity too, I’m glad to hear you loved it.
Read this a while back and loved it! I hope you’re enjoying it, too. Have a great weekend 🙂
This one sounds amazing! Happy weekend!
I am adding that book to my TBR pile. It is right up my alley. I am reading nonfiction this week: Dreaming the Beatles
Sounds like the perfect title from what I can gather of the story. I’d read this.
That is quite a beginning! I’ve seen this book around but really don’t know all that much about it. You’ve definitely caught my interest!
One of these days, I’ll have to read Ng! 🙂
