Classic get Twilightized

wurthering heights twilightAre teens just getting “too cool” to be reading the classics?  Is  that why the publishing industry is marketing Wuthering Heights in a new cover eerily similar to Twilight?  And if you look in the upper right corner, is advertised as being “Edward and Bella’s favorite book”.

If these Twilight inspired covers encourage a young adult to read Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights outside of required reading that’s great; but I am still slightly perplexed about such classics being influenced by Stephenie Meyer.  I understand that there are references to Jane Austen, the Brontes and William Shakespeare in the Twilight Saga, but enough to have their works striped  of their original dust jackets?

I find this frustrating.  Do you think Emily Bronte is rolling in her grave now?

  1. I completely agree with you there, which I think is great. I think the frustration stems from my dislike/misunderstanding of Twilight, but I do hope the new covers inspire young adults to read Pride and Prejudice.
