Bridget Jones’s Baby Movie Review

Bridget's focus on single life and her career is interrupted when she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch ... she can only be fifty percent sure of the identity of her baby's father.

I had my hesitations going into Bridget Jones’s Baby. The trailers only looked so-so but I had enjoyed the first two movies and thought I might finish off Bridget’s journey through singleton on film. What a big mistake.

Bridget, who has broken off her engagement to Mark Darcy is back to her thirtysomething ways despite all her friends moving on and becoming “adults” because let’s face it, in the first two film they were as teen angsty and sensitive as Moaning Myrtle.

However, Bridget not only has a rebound with Mark Darcy but is also multi-millionaire Doctor Mcdreamy himself (AKA Patrick Dempsey). What is a girl to do?

The rest of the film is a tug-of-war between Patrick and Colin as to who will take care of Bridget and be the Daddy. It got a little old and despite the cute throwbacks to the first two movies (ie Renée Zellweger recreating the “all by myself” scene from the first movie) and I didn’t have much invested in it.

Another problem was that I was routing for Doctor McDreamy. He seemed to genially care for Bridget and the baby no matter what the outcome and was just a more outgoing fun guy. In comparison to Darcy who usually looked liked he had poo under his nose there was a stark contrast. Also, on a personal fangirl for the 1995 P&P adaptation I sadly would not want to see Mark Darcy in a wet t-shirt contest.

Even though I thought Jack (Patrick Dempsey) was a better match I knew deep down that Mark Darcy would be the winner with Bridget having her perfect “Happily Ever After” and therefore a little enthusiasm was drained.

Lastly, for those of you wondering about Hugh Grant, they killed his character off! This really bummed me out because despite being the George Wickham of the films I really enjoyed the dynamics between Bridget Jones and Daniel Cleaver.

Anyway, overall the acting was good Bridget Jones’s Baby just had a lackluster story that couldn’t dig its way out.

First sentence – SPOILER: Whoa…you should have stayed through the credits…because the film shows a newspaper headline that Hugh Grant’s character has now shown up and is NOT dead! I saw this movie on Netflix on Demand and while it had its funny moments I HATED all the four letter words being thrown around and the general low moral tone. I wanted to see it just to be able to discuss it with the rest of the JAFF world but I can not recommend it as a “good” film. Others may, like me, want to see it just so have the completed story under their belts but REALLY??!!

  2. Thank you for braving this movie and writing a review of it so that I don’t have to see it! It wasn’t high on my list, but like you, I felt like I *should* finish off the set of movies.

  3. Maybe it was because I went in with low expectations, but I really liked it! I was worried about the whole Daniel thing but Hugh Grant didn’t want to be in it and I liked the funeral scene and how they still managed to make him part of it. Jack was sweet, and it’s a shame that Colin Firth got old, but that happens, haha. If the genders had been reversed I would have been annoyed if Bridget got traded in for a younger model so I did kind of want Mark and Bridget to stay together – and I thought Patrick Dempsey’s character was a bit manipulative sometimes?
