Mr. Darcy’s Christmas Carol started out sweet showing an endearing relationship between he and his sister, but yet had a nice balance of melancholy after his rejected marriage proposal. This is until the three spirits arrived.
George Darcy, Fitzwilliam’s father plays the Bob Marley character and was disappointed by how proud they made him. While I’m aware of the element Marley’s character plays in A Christmas Carol I was a little frustrated as Pride and Prejudice consistently described him as “there wasn’t a better man” (paraphrasing here)
The first ghost, who was Darcy’s mother was sweet and when she showed him snippets of his childhood which included a childhood friend George Wickham, I felt like I was watching an episode of the Flintstone Kids. The second and third ghosts, Georgiana Darcy and Lady Catherine de Bourgh I had issues with because they were/are both living at the time that the story was taken place. I would have much preferred two persons in Darcy’s past (perhaps Wickham’s father?) or just two unknown characters.
The whole point of the novel was for Darcy to overcome his proud behavior and rejection of his proposal to Elizabeth Bennet, but the romance and intimacies that transpired and were shown by the three ghosts were lackluster and thus to be desired.
Overall, Mr. Darcy’s Christmas Carol was a disappointment as a Pride and Prejudice and A Christmas Carol retelling.
