This much we do know: Sophie Toscan du Plantier was murdered days before Christmas in 1996, her broken body discovered at the edge of her property near the town of Schull in West Cork, Ireland. The rest remains a mystery.
Gripping, yet ever elusive, join the real-life hunt for answers in the year’s first not-to-be-missed, true-crime series. Investigative journalist, Sam Bungey, and documentarian, Jennifer Forde, guide listeners through the brutal, unsolved murder and the tangled web of its investigation, while introducing an intricate cast of characters, a provocative prime suspect, and a recovering community whose story begs to be heard.
I’ve always been a sucker for Unsolved Mysteries and Cold Case so when I saw this was free on Audible last year I had to snap it up. I wouldn’t considerWest Cork to be a binge listen but it is addicting. The crime is shocking, and the fact that it has gone unsolved despite having a suspect is surprising. For those like myself, who have devoured Netflix’s The Staircase and Making a Murderer, this is a must-listen.
The sound quality wasn’t always the best, mainly due to background noise or the tone of the person being interviewed. Therefore, I did have to go back and listen at a slower pace. However, it was not a huge complaint.
Because it is unsolved, the podcast just kind of ends, not because it is a cold case but it was almost like the producers didn’t know how to close it. I thought that was very unfortunate and left me just as puzzled as the case itself.
This was my first time listening to a podcast series and do not think it will be my last.
